About Jud Caswell

"Take a little bit of Paul Simon, mix it with James Taylor, Bob Dylan and Shawn Colvin, and you've got Jud Caswell…Lost & Found is a terrific listen. Caswell's lyrics have soul… he evokes a full range of emotions… this is music you will listen to over and over again."
Port City Life

Heralded by Sing Out! magazine as "one of the leading singer-songwriters on the current scene," Jud Caswell has won eight nationally recognized songwriting contests, including the Dave Carter Memorial, Boston Folk Festival, and Kerrville New Folk contests. His song "Blackberry Time" is being taught in the songwriting curriculum at the Berklee College of Music in Boston.

Jud comes from that place where the two Maines meet: where ex-hippies play cribbage with fishermen and a kind of rural poetry is salted with Yankee gumption. He grew up on a little farm in Morrill, Maine, picking carrots and milking goats; listening to records by Cat Stevens and the Beatles, reading Mark Twain and Kahlil Gibran. A multi-instrumentalist from an early age, he wandered through jazz bands, orchestras and medieval ensembles before finding his home on the acoustic guitar.

Jud CaswellEvening Concert

Jud will offer a performance of his original songs in the evening on Thursday, June 25. The concert, which is open to everyone, will take place at 7:00 p.m. on the library's front lawn (in the event of rain, it will be moved indoors to the Pond Cove/Middle School Cafetorium.) Enjoy a relaxing evening featuring what the Times Record described as "summer-day warm acoustic guitar and poetic storytelling. Masterfully done..."

    • Blackberry Time... is a lesson in the craft and process of award-winning songwriting... sophisticated, deeply thoughtful... this new release takes [Jud] to the next level. He's just an enormously talented lyricist, composer, performer, and producer...
It's only a matter of time before he's discovered by the rest of the world; you should discover him now.”

Songwriting Workshop for Teens

Jud will lead a songwriting workshop for students in high school (and those who will be entering high school in the fall.) Jud will work with participants to open themselves up to creativity. "To me," says Jud, "creativity is about really respecting your own individuality and the uniqueness of your experience and world view. I think it's hard for anyone to really believe that the things closest to them are worth writing about."

Jud CaswellJud will try to encourage participants to write from their own lives. He will talk about his own songwriting experiences, play some examples, and lead participants through some creativity exercises to get them to really use their senses. Teens who are more interested in poetry-writing than songwriting are also welcome to participate.

The workshop will be limited to 10 participants. It will take place in the library's Community Room on Thursday, June 25 from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. If weather permits, Jud may wish to work with students outside. Light refreshments will be provided for participants.

Students should feel free to bring any musical instruments they play. Workshop participants may have an opportunity to perform with Jud in the evening concert if they like.

Pre-registration for the workshop required, and may be done in person at the library, by calling the library at 799-1720, or by filling out the form below.
