Barbara Peacock won the Getty Editorial Grant in 2017 for American Bedroom. This January, Barbara joins us at TML to take us Inside the American Bedroom.
Here’s what Hugh Pinney, VP of Getty Images has to say about Barbara’s work:
“Barbara is a lifestyle and editorial photographer living in Portland, Maine. She’s had a life-long passion for documentary and street photography, as well as drawing, having studied at the Boston University School of Fine Arts and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts. In 1982, while in school, she began to photograph the people of her hometown in Westford, Massachusetts, and it ultimately became a 33-year project and book called, appropriately, “Hometown.” In addition to her photography, Barbara runs a small non-profit called The Nightingale Project, in which adults and high-school teens join together to teach art and photography to kids in the US and beyond.
Barbara’s project, “American Bedroom,” offers a composite portrait of the United States through unguarded portraits of Americans in their bedrooms. The images she has made so far – paired with pithy, poetic quotes from each subject – are full of subtle details that invite us to contemplate the idiosyncrasies of each enigmatic life. She reminds us that, in an era rife with hot-take, reductionist analyses of the American body politic, her fellow citizens really do contain multitudes.”
