Maine US GenWeb Project: Volunteers have compiled a comprehensive site on Maine genealogy and history.

Greater Portland Chapter of the Maine Genealogy Society: "The purpose of the Maine Genealogical Society is to promote and encourage interest and scholarship in genealogy
and family history through the collection, exchange, preservation and publication of genealogical records."

Maine.gov Genealogy Resources: You'll find her vital records, an interactive archives database, and a multitude of records and resources related to Maine genealogy research.

Maine Memory Network: "A statewide digital museum that provides unprecedented access to over 13,000 historical items from over 180 museums, historical societies, libraries, and other organizations from every corner of Maine."

Genealogy at the Maine Historical Society: "The Maine Historical Society has one of the largest collections of genealogy material in Maine. We are always adding to our collection, which includes published and compiled genealogies, town histories, vital records, census records, city directories, town reports, maps, photographs, manuscripts, journals, and many other resources to help you with your family history research."

Maine Preservation.org: This organization promotes "the preservation, protection and vitality of Maine's historic places and to encourage quality design that contributes to the livability of our communities." The site includes links to other related Maine organizations and resources.

General Resources

Bureau of Land Management: The Bureau of Land Management has original land patents which can be searched online by state and name. You can view or order a copy of a patent online.

Ellis Island Records: Search for names of passengers who arrived at Ellis Island and the port of New York from 1892-1924.

Family Search: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saint's online research website. Their three big resources - International Genealogical Index, Ancestral File and Family History Library Catalog are all available here.

Genealogical Research at the National Archives: Genealogists are the most numerous users of the Washington, DC, research rooms, and 13 regional records service facilities of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA).

JewishGen: JewishGen is the Premier site for Jewish Genealogy. Lots of online databases.

Rootsweb Genealogical Cooperative: The Rootsweb Genealogical Cooperative is home to an extensive number of email lists relating to Genealogy. There are also numerous user contributed records.

USGenweb Project: "The USGenWeb Project consists of a group of volunteers working together to provide Internet websites for genealogical research in every county and every state of the United States. The Project is non-commercial and fully committed to free access for everyone."

National Center for Health Statistics: Contains information on where to write for vital records in the United States. This site information is arranged by state and offers guidance to insure an accurate response to requests.
