Cape Elizabeth Garden Club Presents: For Peat’s Sake: Alternatives to Using Peat in the Garden
May 26 :6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
Cape Elizabeth Garden Club’s monthly gardening talks have returned to the library! This month: Peat bogs are the world’s largest natural carbon source, storing 30% of land-based carbon, which makes the use of peat a non-sustainable practice. Once it is removed from a bog and processed for use in horticulture, peat is exposed to oxygen and then broken down by decomposing fungi and bacteria, releasing stored carbon back into the atmosphere. In short, using peat moss for horticulture has the same effects as burning fossil fuels! Join us this month as Master Gardener Barbara Dee highlights sustainable alternatives to using peat in your garden. Join us for this event in-person at the library! All are welcome!
