Finding Sacred Place: Map-making Workshop with Molly Maps

December 3, 2022 -- 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Map of Cape ElizabethWhat’s your favorite part of town? Where do you feel the most sense of community? Where does your daily routine take you? Join visual artist, map-maker and geographer Molly Holmberg Brown, aka MollyMaps, for a workshop in which participants will explore places of personal significance in Cape Elizabeth, locations that say something about who you are and what matters most to you.  Molly will guide participants through a creative map-making process with watercolors and pen.  Artistic ‘bones’ not necessary!

This workshop is a both an individual and group process in examining the places in people’s lives that have deep significance. Participants are then guided through researching, designing and creating their own visual artworks that embody the value this place or places.

Molly will facilitate this process through four clear phases:

  1. Identifying important places through mental mapping activities
  2. Sharing and reflection with small and large group discussion
  3. Deeper engagement with a chosen place through sketches, journaling, light research/perusing materials
  4. Creating a personal “mappette” (small map/place design) of this place through pen and watercolor painting techniques.

Throughout the workshop Molly will give participants one-on-one check ins and assistance.

Final maps can be displayed in our Community Art Box project in the spring. The program is designed for adults, but younger participants are welcome if they are interested in a thoughtful, engaged process for the duration.  Attendance is limited, but there will be two opportunities to participate:

Saturday, December 3
10:00 am – 12:00 pm
or
Tuesday, December 6
 6:00 – 8:00 pm.
