Not a Baby Whale: The Life of the Ocean Sunfish

October 21, 2023 -- 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

A photo of an ocean sunfish swimming underwaterFor anyone interested in learning about these gigantic fish, often mistaken for whales

The ocean sunfish (Mola mola) looks like the invention of a mad scientist: huge and flat, this silvery-gray fish has a tiny mouth and big eyes that vanish into an even bigger body with a truncated tail. Topping out around 5,000 pounds (2,268 kg), the mola is the world’s heaviest bony fish–and they can be found, right here in Maine! Join Danielle Marston from the New England Coastal Wildlife Alliance (NECWA) to learn all about these fascinating creatures!

Thomas Memorial Library received a grant from HHMI Tangled Bank Studios, producer of the new IMAX film, Blue Whales: Return of the Giants, and the STAR Library Network, in partnership with the California Science Center and SK Films. This program is part of that grant.

Find out more about our Blue Whale project, and the programs and resources made possible by the grant!
