The Thomas Memorial Library is seeking an energetic college student with a passion for literacy and a desire to share their enthusiasm for reading with the young people in our community to serve in the library’s Family Engagement Department as a Summer Intern.

Description
This position will assist with the planning, implementation, and promotion of Summer Reading programs, including registering children/teens for events, distributing literacy related incentives, and encouraging families to participate in library activities.  

Organizational Relationships

Position Reports to: Receives immediate supervision from the Family Engagement Manager
Internal Relationships: Works closely with the Family Engagement Assistants

Requirements
Potential candidates for this position must be a currently enrolled college student who is 18 years of age or older.

The duration of this internship will be from approximately June 10 – August 10, 2024.

The Student Intern is expected to work 30 hours per week.  The schedule will vary based on programming needs; however, most hours will primarily be scheduled Monday – Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with occasional evening and/or weekend hours.

Duties

  • Registers children for the library’s summer reading programs, and hands out incentives.
  • Assists in preparing materials for library programs.
  • Assists in conducting library programs and events.
  • Shelves books, magazines, newspapers, audio-visual and other library materials.
  • Straightens materials on library shelves and shelf-reads to assure that materials are in the proper order.
  • Empties book return bins.
  • Performs other directly related duties consistent with the role and function of the position as assigned.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE 

Potential candidates for this position must have a high school diploma, and be a currently enrolled college student who is 18 years of age or older.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS 

Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. Standing in and walking between work areas is frequently required. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office equipment. Positions in this classification frequently bend, stoop, kneel, and reach to perform assigned duties, as well as push and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information. Employees must possess the ability to lift and carry materials and objects up to 25 pounds and push and pull materials and objects up to 75 pounds with the use of proper equipment.

ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS 

Employees work in an office environment with moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions, and no direct exposure to hazardous physical substances. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives.
